Berries Girls Track & Field Team Captures County Title in Hard Battle

By Brian Morrill | May 2, 2026 11:54 PM

The Lady Berries won a close County Track & Field Meet over Lewis Cass, Caston, and Pioneer on Saturday morning. The Berries had a team total of 86.50 points followed by Lewis Cass with 74.50, Pioneer 46.50, and Caston with 35.50. The Berries scored victories in the 1600 with Alette Woodhouse's time of 5:24 and Lily Clem in the shot put with a throw of 32 feet, 2.5 inches. "Even more so than the boys meet, the story of this meet was our depth across almost all of the events. We only won 2 of the 16 events to Lewis Cass winning 8 events (half of the total number of events)," said Brian Morrill, the Berries coach. "We talked a lot this past week about how we had to compete at a higher level than our seeds in most of the events. We knew the final score was going to be tight and we were going to have to flip some events by scoring seconds and thirds in events that we couldn't win. Cass has Aftin Griffin, Hope Rush, and Anna Hedrick, and then Pioneer has Aspen Moolenaar who won the Fred Kinder Star of Stars Award this year so we had to take a different path to win today. Our girls came through with some really outstanding efforts that got us on top today. Our senior class of track girls have always worked really hard, they are great students, and leaders, but they hadn't won any team trophies in Track until this season and now they have won two championships in the past two weeks. They are really happy and the coaching staff is happy for them," said Morrill. "We are very fortunate to have Lily Clem and Emma Rogers in the shot put and discus this season. Both have made tremendous strides this season over last year and they have been scoring us lots of points in those two events. Saturday was no exception with Lily winning the Shot Put and Emma taking third place and then Emma getting second in the Discus and Lily picking up 4th place points. In most of the events we were able to place at least 1 athlete in the top 3 places and several times we got a 2nd and a 3rd place in the same event," said Morrill There were two races that stood out on the day. The 4X 100 meter relay was decided by 3/100ths of a second with Cass coming out on top this time. Our girls will be looking to change that outcome in the Sectional Meet," said Morrill, The other race that went down to the wire was the 800 meter race between Aftin Griffin and the Berries Alette Woodhouse. Both girls stayed with each other for the entire two lap race with neither one being able to break away. Aftin got a small advantage over Alette near the finish line, but she had to work for it. Both girls were laying on the track after the race exhausted from the effort. Alette finished less than a half second off of Logansport's school record in the 800 that has been held by former Berry standout Kim Briggs for over 40 years. If Alette can capture the school's 800 meter record this season it will be her third school record this year. She broke Isabel Crain's cross country record in the fall and a few weeks ago she got the 3200 meter record in 11:50 that was previously held by former Berry Jen Crafford. Other top performers for Logansport at the County Meet were Aleyah Kinder in both hurdle races, the 4X 100 relay, and the 4X 400 relay. Adyson Porter excelled in the pole vault, the hurdle events, and also the 4X 100 relay. Rylee Zimmerman tied for second in the high jump and 2nd in the Long Jump. Alette Woodhouse had a first in the 1600, and three seconds in the 800 race, the 3200 race, and the 4X 400 meter relay. Jada Paul and Erin Williams chipped in with some thirds and fourths along with playing an important role on the 4X 100 relay team. Yarictiza Sanchez-Olmos set her personal best in the 3200 meters and Journee Cunningham shaved a second off of her 400 meter time with a new personal best time. The Berries girls team is now 14-0 on the season and will compete in the Hoosier Conference Track & Field meet at West Lafayette next Friday evening.
