The Berries Track & Field teams competed in the Hoosier Conference meet on Friday evening and faced their best overall competition of the season thus far. The meet featured several athletes on track to make it to the State Meet in Indianapolis and others who will likely be in contention to qualify for the State Meet. Woodhouse takes 1st in the 800 Meters and sets School Record Alette Woodhouse led the Berries with a first place finish in the 800 meters with a personal best time and a school record. Woodhouse's time of 2:20.50 broke the school record in the 800 that belonged to Kim Briggs for 44 years with a time of 2:22.70. Woodhouse is in the process of re-writing the Logansport girls distance running records. She broke Isabel Crain's cross country school record this past Fall and this Spring she has now claimed Jennifer Crafford's 3200 meter record and the 800 meter record previously held by Briggs. Briggs still holds the 1600 meter record that has stood since 1984 with a time of 5:02. Briggs finished second at the State Meet that year and went on to run for four years at Illinois State on a full scholarship. "Alette has been getting stronger and stronger as the season has progressed and she is ahead of schedule as far as where I hoped she would be toward the end of her sophomore year. The 2:20 gives her a legitimate shot at advancing to the State Finals in Indianapolis in a few weeks," said her coach, Brian Morrill. "It is still a tough road ahead because she has to go through the Lafayette Regional and that means she will be racing against girls from Carmel, Fishers, Hamilton Southeastern, Noblesville, Westfield, and Hamilton Heights to get to State. Those schools are known for year in and year out being in the top 10 to 20 best programs in the State of Indiana. Alette isn't afraid of competition and has responded whenever new challenges are in front of her. When she was able to stay on Aftin Griffin's heels for almost the entire race at the County Meet I think she gained a lot of confidence and now a week later she goes out and cuts 3 more seconds off of her County Meet race. She knows there is more there this year . . . we just don't know how much more. Whatever it is, Alette will find it. She is that kind of competitor," said Morrill. RJ Clem continues quest to reach the State Meet with a personal best in the Shot Put RJ Clem has been one of the most improved athletes in the State of Indiana in his two throwing events this track season. He finished second against one of Indiana's best on Friday night. Clem threw the shot a personal best 50 feet-3.5 inches for a second place finish and then also took second in the discus event with a throw of 156 feet, 1 inch. "RJ has really come on this season in a lot of ways - he has matured as a competitor and has a great mindset during practices and in meets. I think a lot of credit for that belongs to Coach Carley Camp," said Morrill. Camp joined the Logansport coaching staff this year after graduating from Manchester University where she was a Division III All American thrower. "RJ is more confident in the ring and doesn't get down on himself like he used to - his work ethic also has a lot to do with his success. He is always one of the last ones to leave practice and he sets a great example for the younger throwers," said Morrill. Field Event Athletes Shine at Conference Meet RJ Clem wasn't the only field event athlete that had a great meet on Friday evening. First year track athlete, Rylee Zimmerman missed getting first place in the long jump by just 1 inch. Her leap of 16 feet 1/2 inch took second in the event. She also finished fifth in the high jump. Sophomore Emma Rogers continued her break out season with a 2nd place finish in the discus with a personal best throw of 109 feet 2.5 inches. She also took third place in the shot put with a 33 feet 10 inch toss. Lily Clem, also having a much improved sophomore season, finished 4th in the discus and 6th in the shot put. Adyson Porter tied her personal best in the pole vault with 7 feet, 6 inches as did Ximena Lopez with a 7 foot, 6 inch vault. For the boys Nickenson Hyppolite took third place in the high jump competition clearing a height of 5 feet 10 inches. Elliot Baldini was fourth with a height of 5 feet 8 inches. Baldini also was fourth in the long jump with a personal best of 20 feet 5 inches. Sprint and Distance Results The competition in the sprint and distance races on Friday evening featured high level competition in almost every event. After Alette Woodhouse's first place finish in the 800 the Berries were led by Aleyah Kinder's personal best time of 17.88 3rd place finish in the 100 meter hurdles and Landon Morock's 4th place in the 110 meter hurdles. Adyson Porter, Erin Williams, Aleyah Kinder, and Jada Paul finished fourth in the 4X 100 meter relay. Eli Schurter had a personal best in the 400 meters with a sixth place finish in 54.36 and Jonathan Martinez-Miranda had a personal best time of 2:11.28 in the 800 meters. Team Results For the girls meet the Berries finished 5th overall with 70.5 points, behind Hamilton Heights 159, W. Lafayette 134, Western 94.50, and Benton Central 76. Rensselaer, Twin Lakes, Lafayette Central Catholic, and Tipton finished behind the Berries. For the boys W. Lafayette was first with 146, followed by Hamilton Heights 102, Western 84, Twin Lakes 82, Rensselaer 66, and the Berries with 65. Benton Central, Lafayette Central Catholic, and Tipton rounded out the boys field. The Berries will travel to Benton Central on Tuesday with mostly their JV teams mixed in with a few varsity athletes. The following week the girls sectional will take place on Tuesday, May 19 and the boys sectional will be on Tuesday, May 21. Both sectionals will be held in Kokomo.
