Berries Advance 3 to Lafayette Regional The Lady Berries advanced 3 of their track & field athletes on Tuesday evening at the Kokomo Sectional. Rylee Zimmerman, Alette Woodhouse, and Adyson Porter all advanced to the Lafayette Regional next Tuesday evening. Zimmerman will compete in the long jump and the high jump with her second place finishes in both events. She set her personal best in the long jump by over 3 inches with a leap of 16 feet 7.25 inches and jumped 4 feet 10 inches in the high jump to finish second to Zoie Scheiffer of Northwestern who won with a 5 foot height. “This is Rylee’s first year with our team and she has been a tremendous asset to our program both from a competitive standpoint and just a hard worker and great role model for our younger athletes. She seems to excel in every sport she attempts – we are going to miss her greatly next season,” said Coach Brian Morrill. Alette Woodhouse was the runner up in the 1600 meter run to Sophia Dechert of Western who a ran a personal best time of 5:07 in the 1600 earlier this season. “Alette took the pace out hard on the first two laps with Sophia running right with her and Sophia led the last two laps with Alette right on her heels. Alette was a second and a half behind Sophia at the finish and Hope Rush of Cass ran a tremendous last lap to finish a little over a second behind Alette for third place. The heat and humidity were the highest we had all season in meets and for practices. It took its toll on the distance runners. Alette was scheduled to run the 800 meter race about 30 minutes after the 1600, but we elected to pull her because her heart rate was significantly higher than it should have been at that point and she wasn’t feeling the greatest. Since she had already qualified, we didn’t think it was wise to take a chance with her health. She will just be able to focus on one race next week and I think that is best for a sophomore who will be running against some of the State’s best distance runners at the Regional. Alette has significantly elevated her standing in the State as a distance runner with her times this past season,” said Morrill. Junior Adyson Porter advanced in the pole vault competition with a vault tying her personal best of 8 feet 6 inches. “Addie was sort of in a cluster with four other vaulters who were competing for that last spot to advance to Lafayette and she came out on top with some pressure vaults last night. She competed in four events last evening. She had to go through the qualifying heats in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles before advancing to the finals with a sixth place finish in the finals of the 100 hurdles. Then she ran the first leg of our 4X 100 meter relay team while checking in and out several times from the pole vault competition during her running events. She had a very heavy load to carry last night and I’m sure she is going to be one tired girl today. It is a credit to her that she was able to check in and out from the pole vault and maintain her focus and concentration. She has done a fantastic job for us all season. She never complains and just goes out and does what we ask of her,” said Morrill. Other Berry athletes who finished scoring points for the team were Jada Paul (8th) in the 100 meters, Natalie Hill (6th) in the 400 meters, Kyndra Ely (7th) in the 1600 meters, Aaliyah Ramirez (7th) in the 3200 meters, Porter, Erin Williams, Aleyah Kinder, and Paul (6th) in the 4X 100 meter relay, Chloe Wicker (8th) in the long jump, Ximena Lopez (8th) in the pole vault, Lily Clem (4th) in the discus, Emma Rogers (5th) in the discus, and Lily Clem (5th) in the shot put. The Sectional was the last athletic event for nine Berry seniors who have been outstanding contributors to the track program and as students at LHS over the past four years. Audrey Graham, Nathalia Hernandez, Kayleigh Knickrehm, Ximena Lopez, Marilyn Macias, Kanlaya Nomany, Jada Paul, Kimberly Toloza-Vasquez, Erin Williams, along with Rylee Zimmerman who advanced to the Regional are the kind of athletes and people that coaches long to have in their programs. Some have been with us for four years and others for less, but they have all left their mark on our program. I know I speak for all our coaches when I say that these girls are special. They will go on to bigger and better things in their lives and we have been fortunate to work with them and be around them. They have made us better and I hope we have done the same for them,” said Morrill.
