The Logansport Girls Cross Country make history by winning first Sectional Championship in program history. Logansport Cross Country hosted the IHSAA Cross County Sectional 11 meet and left with the trophy. “From our first meet, this team was working towards this race and this outcome. Cross country can be a long season. We spent 6 days a week together work and racing and this is exactly the outcome they worked for.” Says coach, Kailin Bauman. Placing 4 girls in the top 20 of the race, the Logansport team won the meet with 58 points, edging out Western (76), Northwestern (92), Lewis Cass (98), Kokomo (124), Pioneer (135), Peru (147) and Frankfort (148). Junior Alette Woodhouse took the individual title with a time of 19:48, winning by a margin of 18 seconds over Kokomo’s Alaina Thompson. “What was so exciting about this, is the way Alette raced. She knows the course and knows there were eyes on her. She stayed with the pack through mile 1, and through mile 2, she was still in good company running with a few other athletes. But she opened up over the last mile and earned the win.” Says Bauman. The depth of our team is what earned us the team title this weekend. The athletes have been passing around a bit of a cold and that showed up on Saturday. But because our team is so strong through our 7th spot, some athletes were able to have a tough race, but were supported by their team. Running 2nd for LHS and 9th overall, senior Kate Spradling (21:39) raced through the finish. Stepping up into the 3rd spot for LHS and 16th overall, Aaliyah Ramirez (22:44) raced her lifetime best on the LHS course. Freshman, Cadence James (23:02) fought through sectional nerves to best her course time by nearly a minute. Sophomore Kyndra Ely (23:31) fought through illness to show up for her team. Freshman Samantha Richie (24:38) and junior Yari Sanchez-Olmos were able to race smart, placing themselves ahead of competing team’s 4th and 5th runners to clinch the team victory. Freshman, Eva Woodhouse, was ready to step up and race if she was needed. “I am just so proud of these athletes. The conditions are rarely perfect, and they certainly weren’t this weekend- but through their consistency, effort, and determination, they made history.” Coach Bauman says. The Berries head to Regionals at Brownsburg on Saturday, October 24th.
