The LXC Lady Berries turned in an outstanding performance Saturday morning by winning the 13 team Jacob Graf Memorial Invitational on their home course. The Berries led the field with a total of 68 points, followed by Western with 77, Cass with 83, Maconaquah at 102 and Northwestern rounded out the top 5 with 123. Winamac was sixth at 159, Caston eighth at 193 and Pioneer finished eleventh at 297.
The Berries placed their top 4 runners within 18 seconds of each other and that depth turned out to be the deciding factor in the win. Malia Roberts was seventh overall in 21:52, Carolayn Salamanca was eighth in 21:56, Erica White ninth in 22:06, and Elizabeth Smith eleventh in 22:10. Adria Higgins rounded out the Berry scoring with a thirty-fourth place finish in 24:01. Joseline Hernandez was thirty-fifth in 24:01 also and Makaya Robinson was forty-fourth in 25:12.
“Today was a good win for us and a huge confidence builder because this meet had all the teams in our sectional plus a couple more. The girls have worked very hard this summer and today they got a reward. It is nice to win this one, but the one we really want is on October 6th when everyone comes back for the Sectional. This one just means we had a good summer of training and all we did today was put a big target on our back. We need to understand that these other teams are going to double down now to change the results in October. I think this team is up to that challenge because they love to compete,” said LHS coach Brian Morrill.
The Lady Berries JV team completed the sweep by winning the JV meet with 16 points. Gabby Reyes won the JV portion of the meet with a time of 25:28. Other Berries in the top 7 were Lauren Kelley in 25:30, Emily Viera in 25:32, Emilie Edwards in 26:05, Sheline Coss in 26:33, and Taru Kurunsaari in 27:38.
The Berries will run again next Saturday in the Cass County Meet on the Logansport Course. The junior high teams from the county schools will compete at 9:00 and 9:30 with the high school team competing at 10 am and 10:30.
