The Lady Berries turned in some outstanding individual performances to finish in 3rd place at the North Central Conference meet on Saturday at the Tippecanoe County Amphitheater cross country course on Saturday. Harrison won the meet with 22 points and were followed by McCutcheon with 61, the Lady Berries with 98, Muncie Central with 101, Kokomo had 131, Marion 157, and Lafayette Jeff 165. Richmond, Arsenal Tech, and Anderson participated but did not have enough runners to field a full team.
Juniors Erica White (12th) and Carolayn Salamanca (15th) were named to the All Conference team with personal best times of 21:26 and 21:34 respectively. Freshman Maria Perez (18th) also had a personal best time of 21:55. Cecially Martinez (26th) ran her personal best of 23:04, Gabby Reyes (33rd) had a 23:42, Gabby Richie (37th) had her personal best of 23:55, and Azucena Hernandez (38th) was 24:21.
“We finally got some good running weather with temperatures in the 50’s and that made a big difference, but I can’t say enough about these girls today. Our top 3 of Erica, Carolayn, and Maria were so tough today. The course has some major hills and with about 800 meters to go they were running 15, 16, and 17th. They knew the top 15 make the all conference team. They had to make up about 20 meters on the group ahead of them and Erica White just turned it on – she went from 17th to 12th in the last half mile against some really good runners. She broke her personal best time from a year ago by 20 seconds. Carolayn and Maria hung tough too. Carolayn passed 1 girl to get 15th and Maria ran her best race of the year and lowered her best time by 30 seconds,” said Brian Morrill, LHS coach. Cecially Martinez ran a great race and dropped her personal best time by a minute and Gabby Richie dipped into the 23’s with a 23:55 which was 36 seconds under her previous best. Our other two runners ran well too – they just didn’t quite get their best times,” said Morrill. “We needed a race like this going into Sectional. Now they know that the training we’ve been doing the last 3 weeks on heavy legs is paying off – they weren’t so sure going into this race. They are mentally ready to attack next week,” Morrill said.
The JV Berries concluded their season also with a 3rd place conference finish and were led by Emily Viera with a 24:15. Maggie Fincher(24:15), Alexa Pasquale (25:32), Jessica Mateo (27:27), and Claire Buck (27:28) had personal best times. Irasema Munoz finished in 26:28, Kayla Ortiz 27:10, Moo Paw 31:27, and Leslie Hernandez was 35:41.
Logansport will host the Sectional next Saturday morning at the LHS course.
